New Initiative: Launch of Social Media Clubs | Dennis Ole Itumbi ...

The Launch of Social Media Clubs in Kenya Set For 25th October.

With the proliferation of mobile phones in EA as the tool of choice when accessing internet and mostly social media sites, this changes the ?when and how? we consume information online. Social Edge Africa has thus embarked on a mission to start social media clubs dubbed the ?SocialPro Clubs? their first efforts are directed at the formation of these clubs in universities.

These clubs in a nutshell will unlock the potential on social media to the students, expose them to the limitless possibilities online and help faculty integrate various social media networking sites to teaching and in higher learning to ease content sharing and make learning more fun. The faculty will also benefit from these clubs as they?ll learn how to create and share digital content in various formats with the students across various platforms as well as help them embrace new media and integrate it to teaching.

According to the 24 year old Muthuri Kinyamu, the founder and business director at Social Edge Africa, ?The core objective of these clubs is to teach, educate, create awareness and impart knowledge & skills of various disciplines of social media and platforms to the university students?.

The initiative seeks to develop a talent pool of graduates with a solid understanding of new media to bridge the knowledge gap and demand there is today for people with skills and expertise in various disciplines of social media especially. These clubs will bring together different social media enthusiasts, speakers, entrepreneurs, developers, innovators, bloggers, industry experts, digital agencies and organizations who have immensely contributed to the growth of social media in Kenya.

?

Lack of information or difficulty in accessing it, is what stifles innovation and SocialPro clubs will bridge that gap by providing a platform (both online and offline) that enhances easy exchange of ideas, information and sharing of opportunities among the partners, universities and sponsors.

?

Muthuri strongly feels that there?s need to reach out to the innovative young people especially outside Nairobi, and get them to participate in events such as (online discussions {chats}, Tweetups, networking sessions, hackathons, workshops and boot camps) and connect them both virtually and offline to key resources (people and various entities) that?s what SocialPro clubs will do by harnessing the power of social media. All this is meant to nurture the creativity among students and inspire the development of ideas that provide solutions to our problems through viable businesses.? SocialPro clubs will also tackle unemployment by using social media to connect university students to opportunities, information and key partners in the industry. This is meant to bridge the gap between the universities and the industry as well as help with the integration of EAC member states on social media.

SocialPro clubs will provide a platform that boosts collaboration, because all universities have the ICT infrastructure, well equipped with computer labs, wifi connections where students can access internet through their laptops and mobile phones too; so we just need to inspire students to look beyond ?just being friends? on Facebook to doing business, seeking partners, job searching and networking through social media!

This initiative is endorsed by the ministry of information and technology and Dr. Bitange Ndemo; the PS at the ministry will be the chief guest among other invited guest speakers at the launch of the social media clubs on the 25th of October at the University of Nairobi, School of Business. The pilot phase of SocialPro Clubs will kick off in November in four universities namely; University of Nairobi, Strathmore University, USIU Kenya, Multimedia University and Kenyatta University before the roll out in other universities in January 2013 to other universities & campuses across Kenya.

As we approach the March 2013 social media will play a big role in this election, as it might be misused by politicians or people with selfish interests and agenda to incite Kenyans and spread propaganda. We?ve witnessed Twitter handles that called for killing of Christians in the recent riots in Mombasa recently so this inspired the SocialPro Clubs organizing committee to conceptualize and spearhead a sensitization campaign dubbed? ?AM A SOCIALPRO? that educates people on the ethical & professional ways of engaging online as well as promote responsible us of social media for society good. This campaign will run concurrently with the activities in these universities all the way until March 2013 and will heavily involve the media and SocialPRO ambassadors who will be announced at a later date. To be part of #SocialPro clubs launch and roll out as a partner, sponsor, be part of the team or support for this idea please send an email to Nateford@socialedge.co.ke
