United wins at Chelsea in EPL after 10-year wait

LONDON (AP) -Substitute Javier Hernandez ended Manchester United's 10-year wait for a Premier League victory at Chelsea on Sunday, striking late to secure a 3-2 win after the hosts had two players sent off.

The Mexico striker scored in the 75th minute to inflict the league leaders' first loss of the season and put United just a point behind Chelsea.

"It was a really difficult game as they commanded at the end of the first half, we were very lucky we scored the last goal," Hernandez said. "For some people it will be very controversial, for others it won't. For us, we won the three points and it was very difficult."

United threw away a two-goal lead established inside 12 minutes. Robin van Persie saw his shot turned in by Chelsea defender David Luiz before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Chelsea fought back as Juan Mata curled in a free kick just before half time and Ramires headed in an equalizer eight minutes after the break.

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic was sent off in the 63rd for bringing down Ashley Young, and striker Fernando Torres received a second booking for diving.

"It's a shame a game like this has to be decided in this manner by officials," Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo said. "Surely when he watches the images he (the referee) will realize he made a big mistake."

Chelsea had not lost at Stamford Bridge in a league match to United since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, and he watched in frustration as his side's comeback counted for nothing.

"It's been 10 years since we have won down here," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We had a good record until Jose (Mourinho) came along (in 2004) and spoiled the party."

Chelsea will have a chance for revenge on Wednesday when the teams meet again in the League Cup here.

Early on, Chelsea appeared to be missing captain John Terry, who was serving the second game of his four-match ban for racially abusing an opponent.

After just four minutes, United ripped through Chelsea's defense down the right with Young laying the ball off to Wayne Rooney, who squared to Van Persie in the penalty area.

The Netherlands striker's shot came off the post but it bounced off Luiz into the net.

Chelsea's brittle back line was sliced through again in the 12th when Rafael da Silva was given too much space to storm down the right flank unchallenged.

The defender slipped the ball through to Antonio Valencia, who crossed to the unmarked Van Persie to sweep in his ninth United goal since arriving in August.

United was playing with confidence, pinging the ball across the turf with ease and precession.

Chelsea took time to assert itself on the visitors, but kept United goalkeeper David de Gea busy for the rest of the half, blocking a free kick of Luiz with his outstretched right foot and then thwarting Gary Cahill's header.

But the pressure paid off for Chelsea a minute before the break, with Mata superbly curling the free kick inside the post after Eden Hazard was brought down by Rooney.

The momentum was with Chelsea - and continued after the break as United's defense was the one to be exposed.

The equalizer came eight minutes into the second half as United failed to close down Chelsea's fluid attacking play.

Mata took the ball to the byline and found space to whip in a cross that Torres headed across to Oscar. The Brazilian then chipped across to Ramires, who rose above Tom Cleverley to head past De Gea.

As the hosts continued to pressure the United defense, their plan was ripped apart by being reduced to 10 men in the 63rd when Ivanovic brought down Young, halting his advance to goal.

Six minutes later, referee Mark Clattenburg pulled out the red card again to further infuriate Chelsea.

Having been booked at the end of the first half for a foul on Cleverley, Torres received a second yellow card after being adjudged to have gone down too easily under Evans' challenge.

"I made a bit of contact but I don't feel it was enough to bring him down," Evans said. "I think he probably realized he wasn't getting the ball and went down."

Hernandez restored United's lead in the 75th, 10 minutes after replacing Cleverley.

Van Persie's initial shot appeared to be creeping into the bottom right of the net after Cech got a touch to it but the goalkeeper hacked the ball away.

It fell to Rafael, whose shot was turned into the net by Hernandez, although the striker later accepted he might have been offside.

Just after Hernandez's winner, a steward in front of Chelsea fans fell to the ground and was still receiving treatment as the match ended.

"He slipped and fell and may have hurt his knee," Chelsea spokesman Steve Atkins said, refuting initial suggestions that the steward was hit by an object.

Citizens And Conservation Groups File Suit to Protect Hawai'i's Reef ...

Earthjustice filed the complaint under the Hawai?i Environmental Policy Act in the First Circuit Court on behalf of Rene Umberger, Mike Nakachi, Kaimi Kaupiko, Willie Kaupiko, Conservation Council for Hawai?i, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Center for Biological Diversity.

?DLNR owes it to the people of Hawai?i to take a hard look at the effects of aquarium collection on our coral reefs before it allows these ecologically-valuable animals to be shipped to the mainland for private profit,? said Earthjustice attorney Caroline Ishida.

Aquarium collectors capture hundreds of thousands of fish and invertebrates from Hawai?i?s reefs every year. Alarmingly, DLNR has stated that this should be considered a minimum estimate because it does not verify the accuracy of submitted catch reports.

The collected animals are primarily herbivorous, reef-dwellers that serve unique functions in the coral reef ecosystem, such as helping to control algae growth. Studies have shown that reducing diversity of reef fish and shellfish affects a reef?s ability to respond to stresses or disturbances. This is vitally important as reefs come under serious pressure from global threats, including climate change and ocean acidification.?DLNR has not conducted any studies showing how its policy of handing out permits for the asking will affect Hawai?i?s reefs over time.

The complaint seeks a court order to force the state to comply with the Hawai?i Environmental Policy Act?s requirement to examine aquarium collection?s effects on the environment before issuing collection permits. The complaint also asks the court to halt collection under existing commercial aquarium permits and to stop DLNR from issuing new permits until the environmental review is complete.

?Our coral reefs are among Hawai?i?s most precious resources, and DLNR should have all of the available information about aquarium collection before deciding whether to issue these permits,? said Marjorie Ziegler, of Conservation Council for Hawai?i.

There is currently no limit on the number of aquarium permits that DLNR can issue and no limit on the number of animals a commercial collector can take under a permit.?Aquarium collection can occur anywhere in the state, except in designated protected areas, but primarily occurs in waters around O?ahu and along the west coast of the island of Hawai?i. DLNR has expressed concern in official reports over the increasing number of collectors in the state and the growing number of animals harvested from the reefs by the aquarium trade.

?I have done thousands of scuba dives on reefs around the state over the years, and I have seen a noticeable difference in reef health between areas that are open to collection and those where collection is prohibited,? said Rene Umberger. ?DLNR needs to fulfill its basic public duty to examine this practice before issuing permits that allow collectors to remove many thousands of animals from the reefs every year, particularly because of the global stresses reefs are facing.?

It's already Election Day in Iowa -- and it has been for weeks

It's Election Day in Iowa, and it has been for weeks.

Recent polling in the state shows Republican Mitt Romney quickly closing the gap in the presidential race, but that may be less and less important with every day that passes. Political watchers say President Obama has been successful this year at getting his supporters to take advantage of Iowa's early voting system and that likely has given him a head start at a time when he still leads in the polls.

Pollster Ann Selzer, who runs the respected Des Moines Register survey, said there are signs that Iowans who have already cast a ballot are leaning heavily toward Obama.

"Two-to-one, people who say they have already voted are Barack Obama supporters," Selzer told TPM. "The majority of people who plan to vote early are Barack Obama supporters. The majority of people who plan to vote on election day, Romney supporters. I think that's what's gets tricky ? you have to have a huge margin on election day to offset the Democrats."

Early voting in Iowa began on Sept. 27, and already nearly 520,000 people requested early ballots, according to elections officials. Of those, some 347,000 had filled out and returned them as of Oct. 22.

In 2008, a little more than 1.5 million people voted in Iowa and the state's six electoral votes went to Obama by a solid 9.5 points. Few expect that sort of margin this time around, and polling throughout the summer suggested the state might be one of Romney's best pick-up opportunities.

"I think that [Romney's] early showing has a lot to do with there being a Republican caucus and nothing happening on the Democratic side," Selzer said. "You had a lot of Republican messages in this state, a lot of 'Fire Barack Obama' messages. ... So that had a lasting impact."

As the summer faded, Obama started to tick up in the state in September and October, even though current polling has been mixed.

"The reason Obama became stronger is two things ? first of all there are economic signals that things are getting better, and that became a little hard to ignore ... and I think Obama has in place a stronger ground game, and that is starting to pick up," Selzer said. "So all of the people that he had in place from four years ago, a lot of that infrastructure is still there. Romney sat out Iowa, really, and has chosen to have less presence in terms of a ground game ... and in Iowa, with so much early voting, that ground game is really critical."

And that could make all the difference in the state. Polls of late have been more cloudy -- President Obama held a solid 8-point lead in a NBC News/Marist College poll released Thursday, but Romney was up 49 percent to Obama's 48 percent in a survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling the day after. But among early voters ? a solid 34 percent of the NBC/Marist sample and 31 percent those polled by PPP ? two-thirds had already cast their ballots for the president, with a third going for Romney.

Overall, the PollTracker Average of Iowa shows Obama with a small lead.

"When likely voters intend to cast their ballot tells us a lot about what is happening in Iowa," Lee M. Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said in a statement, citing the Obama advantage among early voters. "In contrast, Romney leads by double digits with those who will vote on Election Day."

That means a key for the Obama campaign will be to overwhelm the Republican ticket before Nov. 6 so that Election Day becomes somewhat a foregone conclusion.

Selzer pointed the youth vote. During the last month, President Obama, Vice President Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama have all campaigned on college campuses with an early voting station set up nearby. That allows the campaign to point supporters directly to the place where they can drop off their ballots before the buzz of the rally wears off.

Selzer said that kind of push could send early voter turnout to huge levels this year. Thirty-two percent of Iowa voters cast their ballots early in 2008 and 35 percent did in 2010. The question this year is whether it will approach 50 percent.

"If it's half, that will be jaw-dropping," Selzer said. "But it feels within the realm of possibility."

Ed. note: The post has been updated to reflect that the NBC/Marist and PPP polls showed two-thirds of early voters, not likely voters, had already cast their ballots for Obama.

Jessica Biel & Justin Timberlake?s Wedding Photos Have Been Released

Money Well Spent?

Posted by: Trent on |

Yesterday we learned that People magazine won the rights to publish Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake?s wedding photos here in the US (while OK! magazine won the rights to publish in Europe) by shelling out a reported sum of $300,000. to the couple for the photos. Today, we get our FIRST LOOK at Justica?s wedding photos which will appear in this week?s NEW issue of People magazine. As you can see below, Justin and Jessica had a lot of fun posing for their wedding photos ? click below and check it out.

Judging by their wedding photo, Justin Timberlake was more than ready to jump into his new life with Jessica Biel, springing airborne with joy. When the couple of five years exchanged personal vows in a romantic Italian ceremony Oct. 19, ?it was a really special evening,? Timberlake, 31, tells PEOPLE in this week?s cover story, in which the newlyweds open up for the first time about their special day and share exclusive photos. ?It was a total fantasy experience,? adds Biel, 30. One cause for emotion? The singer-actor played the guitar and serenaded his beautiful bride-to-be as she walked down the aisle in a custom, petal pink Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown. ?It was an original piece I wrote specifically for the evening and for her,? says Timberlake, who wore a Tom Ford tux he helped design. The pair welcomed 100 guests, including close friends Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland and Biel?s 7th Heaven costar Beverley Mitchell, to the Borgo Egnazia resort in southern Italy for a week-long wedding celebration. ?It was a lot to ask of them to travel, so we figured we?d give our guests a good party!? says Timberlake.

Naturally, the full set of wedding photos and all the deets from the wedding will be featured in the new issue of People magazine so you might want to get out there and snap up a copy. I think it?s really very cute that JT composed and performed a song for Jessica especially for their wedding day ? that?s romance, y?all. To be honest, while I personally found this Justica wedding to be kind of ho-hum, I must admit that after seeing this first wedding photo, I?m very curious to see the rest of the photos inside the new issue of People. I think it?s a bit sneaky and brilliant that the People editors figured out a way to feature a photo of Britney Spears on the cover of Justin Timberlake?s wedding issue (the ONLY 3 people on the cover are Justin, Jessica ? and BRITNEY) ? well done, editors. What do y?all think of this first look at the Justica wedding photos? Are you curious to see more? Will you be picking up this issue of People magazine?

AT&T sells 4.7 million iPhones and 1.4 million other smartphones, makes $3.6 billion profit in Q3

AT&T sells 4.7 million iPhones and 1.4 million other smartphones, makes $3.6 billion profit in Q3 (video)

AT&T's third quarter figures have shown that the network certainly has a handle on this "selling smartphones" malarkey. In the last three months, it's managed to ship 6.1 million smartphones, of which 4.1 million were iPhones -- which has helped the company to maintain a turnover of $31.5 billion, just $0.1 billion below the previous quarter. Notably, net profits tumbled to $3.6 billion, down from $6.8 billion in Q2, but that's easily explained away with a $3.8 billion share buyback scheme and the company's continued cost of building new LTE infrastructure. It's also managed to squirrel away $6.5 billion in cash under the mattress for a rainy day.

Digging into those numbers, it's been able to add a new 678,000 new wireless customers to its business, making a total of 105.9 million users on its network. 44.5 million of those people, or 63.8 percent of 'em, are now smartphone users, and AT&T said it had a "record sales quarter" with Android and Windows Phone handsets. It also coaxed 200,000 new U-verse TV subscribers and 613,000 high-speed internet users to sign up with Ma 'Bell. If you'd like to see Ralph de la Vega give you his personal take on the company's rosy financials, then head on past the break -- but be warned, at no point does he swim through a pool of money screaming "I'm king of the world!"

Depeche Mode to kick off 2013 world tour in Tel Aviv

PARIS (Reuters) - Depeche Mode, the British synthpop pioneers whose hits "People Are People" and "Master and Servant" cemented their status in 1980s New Wave and beyond, are planning a 2013 worldwide tour to follow the release of a new album.

The band, which has sold over 100 million records since its 1981 debut album, launch the tour in Tel Aviv on May 7, followed by 34 shows in Europe and a leg in North America.

"To be making music for more than half our lives ... it's pretty incredible to still be able to do that," lead singer Dave Gahan told a press conference in Paris on Tuesday.

Dressed all in black, the three members of the band - Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher - acknowledged their longevity in the music business while making off-hand jokes about their ages, now 50 and 51.

"I've got some notes here -- memory's not so good," quipped Gahan, who made passing references to his past substance abuse problems and the "ups and downs" of the band, which last toured in 2009-2010.

"Performing onstage is really what it's all about these days," he told the crowd of press and fans. "It's very different from what it was 20 years ago. You get the energy from the performance."

Gore, the band's principal songwriter, revealed little about the upcoming album, their 13th studio album for which Depeche Mode recorded 20 tracks. But he let slip a teaser for fans.

"I think there are three or four songs that are up there with some of the best we've ever done," confessed Gore.

Five of the songs were written by frontman Gahan, whose rich baritone has been the band's hallmark through the decades.

Performing today is "really an emotional thing," said Gahan.

"It's really raw and emotional to the point where at the end of tours, it's hard to say goodbye," he said.

Depeche Mode's textured sound, a blend of synthesizers, industrial samples, driving percussive and moody lyrics, made them one of the most popular bands to emerge from the British New Wave in the early 1980s.

Later successes, from 1989's "Personal Jesus" to 1997's "Barrel of a Gun" earned them fans among Goths and club kids around the world.

One reporter in the crowd cited the prevalence of synthesizer music today and the many musicians who have cited Depeche Mode as an influence, asking whether "You think you're still the best at this genre?"

"Yes, naturally," deadpanned Gahan, without missing a beat.

Police released a photograph of the man they identified as Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer. They said he was still at-large and the public's help was needed in tracking him down.

Brookfield police told WTMJ-AM the shooting happened about 11 a.m. Sunday at a spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall. The mall and a country club adjacent to the spa were locked down, local media reported.

Brookfield Police Lt. John Beth said a bomb squad from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department was at the spa. He wouldn't say why the unit was there but said it was not routine to have it respond to a shooting.

Spokesmen for the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said their agencies also had agents participating in the investigation.

Milwaukee FBI spokesman Leonard Peace said his agency sent a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, among others.

Online court records showed a temporary restraining order was issued against Haughton in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Oct. 8 because of a domestic abuse complaint.

Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital, said four shooting victims were taken there, and three more were expected. She said none of the four already received were in critical condition.

The shooting took place at Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from the mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

What's Your Favorite Fall Pasta Dish? | The Kitchn

This time of year, I start getting a little crazy with pasta. I begin to wonder how it would taste with sweet potatoes, ginger, and other flavors I associate with fall. Some of these are classic and expected: Sage, brown butter, butternut squash (like in this pasta). But I also like to push pasta beyond these wonderful yet simple combinations. How would pasta be with rutabaga? Or turnips? Or scrambled up with a huge mess of bitter fall greens ? escarole, beet tops, winter spinach?

Do you do this? Do you crave pasta in the fall? If so, what is your favorite autumn pasta dish? A butternut squash lasagna? Scarlet beet pasta? How do fall and pasta go together?

Protesters break into grounds of Libya's parliament

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - About 500 protesters broke into the grounds of Libya's parliament building on Sunday to demand an end to violence in Bani Walid, a former stronghold of the late Muammar Gaddafi that is being shelled by militiamen from a rival town.

Militias, many from Misrata and aligned with the Defence Ministry, have been shelling the hilltop town of 70,000 people for several days. State news agency LANA said on Sunday that 22 people had been killed and 200 wounded in the fighting.

"We are here to demand the government find a peaceful solution for the tribal war that is happening in Bani Walid," protester Nasser Ehdein said.

Libya's new rulers have held elections but have struggled to impose their authority on a country awash with weapons a year after Gaddafi was killed and the fighting in Bani Walid underscored how tenuous their control remains.

In a country where rumors abound, there were also conflicting reports over the weekend about the fate of Gaddafi's son Khamis and that of the late autocrat's former spokesman.

In Tripoli, an unarmed group of male and female protesters forced their way past security guards at the gates of the grounds of the parliament buildings, chanting "There is no God but God, and President (Mohammed) Magarief is God's enemy."

Security forces fired rounds into the air as they held their positions at the doors of the building, while elected members of the General National Congress met inside.

Ehdein said most of the protesters were residents of Tripoli who had family in or hailed from Bani Walid.

This is the second time protesters have broken into the grounds of the assembly since it took power in the summer.

The first time was on October 4 when a group of protesters who believed their town was underrepresented in a proposed Libyan government stormed the assembly as it prepared to scrutinize the prime minister-elect's nominations.

In the port city of Benghazi anger boiled over on Sunday night where about 400 unarmed but angry protesters stormed the grounds of private Libyan satellite channel Libya al-Ahrar.

The protesters demanded that the channel air photographic evidence that Gaddafi's son Khamis had been killed in battle. Libyan officials had announced he had been killed in fighting in Bani Walid but that has not been confirmed.

Demonstrators said they were furious over what they deemed a false rumor, saying it had helped fuel violence in Bani Walid and stir up tribal enmity.

Bani Walid was one of the towns that remained loyal to Gaddafi the longest. It remains isolated from the rest of Libya and former rebels say there are still pockets of support for the old government there.

ROCKETS

In Bani Walid itself, 140 km (86 miles) south of Tripoli, militia leader Abdelkarim Ghomaid said fighting was in full swing.

"The shelling is coming from all sides," he said by phone.

A Bani Walid resident said by phone: "Fighting is continuing today. There is smoke rising over certain parts of the city."

Outside Bani Walid, hundreds of vehicles lined up in the village of Weshtata, 80 km (50 miles) from Tripoli, waiting to be checked by government forces as families fled the fighting.

"We are escaping the danger of the rockets, the shrapnel, and the deaths inside. There hasn't been electricity for days," said one man who had his family in a pick-up truck.

A feud between Misrata and Bani Walid was inflamed by the death of rebel Omran Shaban after he was detained for two months in Bani Walid. Shaban, from Misrata, was the man who found Gaddafi hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya's congress ordered the Defence and Interior Ministries to find those responsible for abducting Shaban and suspected of torturing him. It gave Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

Hundreds of families have fled the fighting in Bani Walid to Tarhouna, some 80 km away, where a statement from the prime minister's office on Saturday said militias had captured former Gaddafi spokesman Moussa Ibrahim.

However, in an audio clip posted on Facebook, a person purporting to be Ibrahim, who held news conferences in Tripoli during the war, dismissed news of his arrest.

There was no independent verification of the authenticity or timing of the Facebook post, dated October 20.

Some officials said Gaddafi's son Khamis had been captured in Bani Walid and died after being taken to Misrata. But there was no official written statement from the government on this, as with previous captures of former Gaddafi-era figures.

On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur said on his official Twitter account that the announcement of Ibrahim's arrest and Khamis's death was made without confirmation of the news.

Khamis was reported dead on at least three separate occasions during last year's conflict. A Syrian-based television station that supported Gaddafi said he had been killed in fighting southeast of Tripoli on August 29, 2011.

Remind bosses: The wrong choice of words can bolster an ...

Ill-chosen words can haunt incautious supervisors. Example: Using the term ?slacker? to describe someone who misses lots of work. Here?s why: Disparaging comments may be proof that the employer retaliated against an employee for taking too much leave.

Recent case: Craig was a Lee County EMT. He took considerable FMLA leave for himself and to care for his parents. The county routinely approved his FMLA leave requests.

Then, after six months, he was terminated for arriving late to an emergency call. He sued, alleging retaliation.

As evidence, he introduced testimony from his union representative. The rep recalled that he told several employees that management had Craig on its ?radar? for taking too much time off.

The rep also testified that supervisors referred to employees with absenteeism problems as ?slackers.?

Craig also pointed out that another EMT who was also late for a call was merely suspended. She hadn?t used FMLA leave?and in her case, the patient actually died, perhaps because of the delay.

That was enough for the court to let Craig?s case proceed. A jury will now decide whether he was really punished for being a late or for taking too much FMLA leave. (Cotora v. Lee County, No. 2:10-CV-775, MD FL, 2012)

Terry apologizes, won't appeal match ban for abuse

LONDON (AP) ? John Terry apologized Thursday for using inappropriate language during an on-field confrontation and will accept a four-match ban for racially abusing an opponent during a Premier League game.

The Chelsea defender was suspended by the Football Association for abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in a match last October.

"I want to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone for the language I used in the game against Queens Park Rangers last October," Terry said in a statement. "Although I'm disappointed with the FA judgment, I accept that the language I used, regardless of the context, is not acceptable on the football field or indeed in any walk of life."

Terry has always claimed he only repeated the obscene phrase he was accused of saying.

Terry was cleared in a criminal trial in July of a racially aggravated public order offense but was found guilty by the FA on a lesser burden of proof, with the governing body's disciplinary panel finding his defense "improbable, implausible and contrived."

The ban was half the length of that given to Liverpool striker Luis Suarez for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during another Premier League match last October. Terry also was fined a record $356,000 by FA.

Having retired from England in protest at the FA's pursuit of the high-profile case and having lost the national team captaincy, Terry had the recent two-week international break to consider his next step with lawyers.

"After careful consideration, I have decided not to appeal against the FA judgment," Terry said. "My response was below the level expected by Chelsea Football Club, and by me, and it will not happen again."

Chelsea wouldn't reveal what sanctions the club had taken against Terry, saying the "confidential" disciplinary action is "in accordance with our long-standing policy."

"Chelsea Football Club believes John Terry has made the correct decision by not appealing against the FA judgment relating to language he used at the QPR match last October," a club statement read. "Chelsea also appreciates and supports John's full apology for the language he used. The club firmly believes such language is not acceptable and fell below the standards expected of John as a Chelsea player."

His suspension will start immediately, meaning he misses Premier League games against Tottenham, Manchester United and Swansea, as well as a League Cup fourth-round match against United.

If Terry is wearing the captain's armband when he returns to action ? he will be available domestically for Chelsea's league match against Liverpool on Nov. 11 ? then the club is likely to have only punished him with a fine.

Chelsea, which has stood by Terry throughout the feud, has a policy of banning fans for life if they are found guilty of racial abuse.

"Looking forward, I will continue to do my part in assisting the club to remove all types of discriminatory behavior from football," Terry said. "I am extremely grateful for the consistent support of Chelsea FC, the fans and my family."

Decreased gene activity is likely involved in childhood risk for anxiety and depression

Decreased gene activity is likely involved in childhood risk for anxiety and depression

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Decreased activity of a group of genes may explain why in young children the "fear center" of the anxious brain can't learn to distinguish real threats from the imaginary, according to a new University of Wisconsin study.

The study, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), lays out evidence that young primates with highly anxious temperaments have decreased activity of specific genes within the amygdala, the brain's fear center. The authors hypothesize that this may result in over activity of the brain circuit that leads to higher risk for developing disabling anxiety and depression.

This may be particularly important since the genes involved play a major role in forming the brain connections needed for learning about fears. While all children have fears and anxieties, the authors suggest that children with low levels of activity of these genes develop anxious dispositions because they fail to learn to cope by overcoming their early childhood fears.

"Working with my close collaborator and graduate student, Drew Fox, we focused on understanding the function of genes that promote learning and plasticity in the amygdala," says Dr. Ned H. Kalin, chair of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, who led the research. "We found reduced activity in key genes that could impair the ability to sculpt the brain, resulting in a failure to develop the capacity to discriminate between real and imaginary fears."

Kalin says the study helps support the need for early intervention in children identified as excessively shy and anxious. It may also point a way to better treatments aimed at decreasing the likelihood of children developing more severe psychiatric problems. Anxiety in children is quite common and can lead to anxiety and depression in adolescence and often precedes anxiety disorders, depression and substance abuse in adults.

Most small children go through a phase when they're frightened of many things, including monsters or new social situations, Kalin says, but their maturing brains soon learn to distinguish real threats from the imaginary. But some children do not adapt, generalize their fears to numerous situations, and may later develop serious anxiety and mood disorders. These children tend to be more sensitive to stress, produce more stress hormones and have heightened nervous-system activity.

Kalin, Fox and co-authors wondered whether some differences in the developing amygdala prevent it from learning how to regulate and adapt to anxiety. Kalin's earlier work identified a subset of young monkeys, similar to extremely shy children, with an inherited anxious disposition. Using brain imaging, the authors showed that high levels of amygdala activity predicted trait-like anxiety in anxious young primates. Like their stable and enduring anxious dispositions, these individuals also had chronically elevated levels of amygdala activity.

"We believe that this pinpoints a critical region in the brain that determines an individual's level of trait anxiety,'' Kalin explains.

In examining a specific part of the amygdala, the central nucleus, the researchers analyzed gene expression, which reflects both environmental and inherited influences. Within the central nucleus of the amygdala the authors found that anxious individuals tended to have decreased expression of a gene called neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 3 (NTRK3). Low levels of this gene that encodes for a brain cell surface receptor may be why the amygdala of an anxious monkey or child is chronically overactive and unable to overcome anxiety and fears.

"This is the first demonstration that the early risk to develop anxiety and depression may be related to the underactivity of particular genes in the developing primate amygdala,'' Kalin says. "These findings have provided the basis for our hypothesis that can explain the early childhood risk to develop anxiety and depression. It also suggests some creative ways to help children with extreme anxiety by developing new treatments focused on increasing the activity of specific genes involved in facilitating the brain development that underlies fear learning and coping."

Shailene Woodley Boards 'Divergent,' Latest Young Adult Phenom

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Shailene Woodley is set to join "Divergent," hoping, no doubt, that the futuristic adventure will have the same propulsive effect on her career that "The Hunger Games" had on Jennifer Lawrence's rise to stardom.

Summit Entertainment said Thursday that "The Descendants" star is in final negotiations to join the film, which the studio sees as a potential young adult franchise. Like "The Hunger Games" and "Twilight," "Divergent" is based on a best-selling book and will arrive on screen with a devoted fan base.

"Divergent" will be directed by Neil Burger ("The Illusionist") and will hit theaters on March 21, 2014.

Set in a dystopic future (is there any other kind, these days?), the society of "Divergent" separates people into distinct factions based on their personalities. That's bad news for Tris Prior (Woodley), who finds out she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. The action kicks off when Tris uncovers a conspiracy to destroy her fellow Divergents.

The book was written by 23-year-old Veronica Roth, a first-time novelist, who followed her first novel with the book "Insurgent."

Woodley turned heads last year as a grieving teenager in Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," and is set to complete her starring role in the long-running ABC Family series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" after its upcoming fifth season.

Woodley is represented by Paradigm, Savage Agency, Principato-Young Entertainment and her attorney, Felker Toczek Gellman Suddleson.

New technique for nanostructure assembly pioneered

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? A team of researchers from the University of Florida department of chemistry has developed a new technique for growing new materials from nanorods.

Materials with enhanced properties engineered from nanostructures have the potential to revolutionize the marketplace in everything from data processing to human medicine. However, attempts to assemble nanoscale objects into sophisticated structures have been largely unsuccessful. The UF study represents a major breakthrough in the field, showing how thermodynamic forces can be used to manipulate growth of nanoparticles into superparticles with unprecedented precision.

The study is published in the Oct. 19 edition of the journal Science.

"The reason we want to put nanoparticles together like this is to create new materials with collective properties," said Charles Cao, associate professor of chemistry at UF and corresponding author of the study. "Like putting oxygen atoms and hydrogen atoms together in a two-to-one ratio -- the synergy gives you water, something with properties completely different from the ingredients themselves."

In the UF study, a synergism of fluorescent nanorods, sometimes used as biomarkers in biomedical research, resulted in a superparticle with an emission polarization ratio that could make it a good candidate for use in creating a new generation of polarized LEDs, used in display devices like 3-D television.

"The technology for making the single nanorods is well established," said Tie Wang, a postdoctoral researcher at UF and lead author of the study. "But what we've lacked is a way to assemble them in a controlled fashion to get useful structures and materials."

The team bathed the individual rods in a series of liquid compounds that reacted with certain hydrophobic regions on the nanoparticles and pushed them into place, forming a larger, more complex particle.

Two different treatments yielded two different products.

"One treatment gave us something completely unexpected -- these superparticles with a really sophisticated structure unlike anything we've seen before," Wang said.

The other yielded a less complex structure that Wang, and his colleagues were able to grow it into a small square of polarized film about one quarter the size of a postage stamp.

The researchers said that the film could be used to increase efficiency in polarized LED television and computer screens by up to 50 percent, using currently available manufacturing techniques.

"I've worked in nanoparticle assembly for a decade," said Dmitri Talapin, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Chicago who was not involved with the study. "There are all sorts of issues to be overcome when assembling building blocks from nanoscale particles. I don't think anyone has been able to get them to self-assemble into superparticles like this before."

"They have achieved a tour-de-force in precision and control," he said.

Taking the law into his own hands

?

?Montreal is such a fascinating place,? Peter Kirby says, ?and part of its fascination is its raw side, its dark side.?

Photograph by: Marie-France Coallier , The Gazette

MONTREAL - Peter Kirby has fashioned a gripping work of fiction with his first novel, The Dead of Winter, a crime thriller set in his adopted hometown of Montreal.

Clearly, it didn?t take the author long to grasp the darkness that can overtake this city in the dead of winter. The book touches on all the murky elements of city life as a dispirited police detective investigates the murders of five homeless people over the Christmas holidays. His trail leads him through back alleys and corporate boardrooms and even into the hallowed halls of the Catholic Church.

All compelling stuff, and no doubt there will be follow-up thrillers to come, featuring Kirby?s anti-hero cop Inspector Luc Vanier. And a bestselling crime writer has been born ? in his late 50s. But Kirby?s own story is almost as compelling as that of his novel. He took what has to be one of the most circuitous paths imaginable to get to this point.

Born in Cork, Ireland, Kirby grew up on the hardscrabble streets of Brixton, the South London ?hood where it didn?t take much for a ?mouthy Irish kid with glasses? to get the stuffing beat out of him by local bruisers. He hadn?t contemplated university because his grades were hardly up to snuff, so, at 17, instead he embarked on what he hoped would be a new life in North America.

He worked as a cook for a spell in Boston, New York and Toronto before arriving in Montreal several years later in 1982. He began at the bottom here as a busboy at a Howard Johnson?s and eventually worked his way up to assistant chef. He also did time as a smoked-meat cutter at Ben?s. Then he heard about Concordia?s mature student program, which would admit him regardless of his past education history.

To cut to the chase, Kirby did well enough studying at night at Concordia to gain admission to McGill?s law program, from which he later graduated ? all the while toiling as a breakfast cook from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. before his classes.

Kirby currently practises international law with Fasken Martineau, one of the largest firms in the country. This year, American Lawyer listed him as one of Canada?s leading lawyers. His fort? is international arbitration and his work has brought him into disputes from here to the Balkans.

Kirby apparently found the time to ?scribble? fiction when he was a teen and has kept at it ever since.

?Part of the thrill of being able to write fiction is that you would get fed up writing pleadings for court with the judge looking at you and saying this looks to be very creative ? but, by that, the judge is really saying that it?s a crock,? relates Kirby, over a beer at a downtown bistro. ?Now I can write fiction, and hopefully people will say it?s creative and it won?t be a criticism.?

Though Kirby still speaks with a strong Irish lilt, he has come to know Montreal as well as any native. In addition to some of the more unsavoury sorts who inhabit this town, The Dead of Winter is dotted with dozens of references to familiar places and restos, from all corners of the island and beyond.

?I?ll always be an outsider here,? Kirby says. ?But Montreal is such a fascinating place and part of its fascination is its raw side, its dark side. That?s part of its allure. And, really, nobody wants to live in a completely sterile environment.?

No worries ever about that here.

Kirby began writing The Dead of Winter five years ago. In 2010, he sent an earlier manuscript for consideration for the Unhanged Arthur Award for best unpublished work by the Crime Writers of Canada. It was shortlisted for the prize. Kirby pressed on for another two years to complete this expanded version of the original novel.

This isn?t Kirby?s first manuscript. In his early 20s, he painstakingly pounded out a novel on a typewriter, which he passed along to a friend. Alas, his buddy went out drinking and left the manuscript behind on a train ? never to be found again. ?But that was the best thing that could have happened to me. The thing was probably absolute crap. Since then, I had always been starting but never finishing books. But with this one, I made the conscious decision to finish and put words on paper that I would be proud of.?

Art somewhat imitates Kirby?s life at the beginning of The Dead of Winter. Like the book?s lead character, Vanier, Kirby found himself alone on Christmas Eve, ?drinking and thinking? about his lot.

?I was listening to some jazz, stuff to shoot yourself by,? says Kirby, the divorced father of two grown-up children. ?But rather than feel sorry for myself, I started writing on a yellow pad and this character just appeared. Sure there were problems. I was flying by the seat of my pants. I noticed one of my characters was still speaking two days after I killed her. That?s a problem. Still, it got me going until a first draft was complete.?

Then with the book finished, Kirby had an even more difficult task at hand: to find a publisher. ?Difficult is not the word I would use ? impossible is. Yes, I did find a publisher, but does this mean mine is better than any of the thousands of other manuscripts out there? It was so serendipitous. Hell, finding an agent these days is as difficult as finding a publisher,? says Kirby, who reveals that he has a three-book deal with Linda Leith Publishing.

?I was blessed, but I won?t be giving up the day-job. I actually love being a lawyer.?

The Dead of Winter (Linda Leith Publishing, $21.95) is now available at bookstores.
