Ben Godby: MBA student blog (en fran?ais)

My MBA student blog, in French, is now live on the University of Ottawa website. Hooray.

I guess this is my first non-literary freelance gig. Or, at least, non-literary freelance gig that pays money (I've worked for free at newspapers and blogs before). So far, I think it takes an inordinate amount of energy to accomplish. To be brutally honest, it's not terribly fun. On the one hand, blogging can never compare to interstellar battlecruiser battles or frogmen versus squirrelfolk ambushes. But, particular to this gig, there are far too many lenses I have to wear to write this blog: I'm a student at the university where I am also an employee, for one; second, the blog is published by that university; and third, I'm writing it in French.

That's not to say there isn't honest and forthright material in my posts. There is. But the competing priorities - student, blogger, employee, second language student - make it less easy to speak with absolute candor. It also takes some serious brainpower for me to write in French, brainpower that's already being drained by my courses and my own creative writing. That makes it harder to think of what might be interesting to say on a student blog. For that reason, I can't but wonder whether it all comes out sounding very trite.

But no matter. They're paying me better than the science fiction and fantasy magazines that are not buying my short stories, and it's another credential to both my literary and professional CV. That said, though, I'm only halfway through my contract and I'm already burnt as I wrack my mind for interesting subjects that are also not ridiculously controversial.

Well. I'm not doing a very good job of promoting my writing. Go forth and Google Translate my genteel prose. Amazement is sure to follow.

J.C. Penney sales plunge, much worse than expected

(Reuters) - J.C. Penney Co Inc reported that sales at stores open at least a year fell 31.7 percent in the fourth quarter, even steeper than the sharp drop analysts expected for the struggling department store chain.

The poor results for the quarter, which included the holiday season, capped a rough first year for Penney's turnaround. The company's shares fell 8 percent in after hours trading.

Chief Executive Ron Johnson, who was brought in to revive the chain after running Apple Inc's retail business, tried to put a positive forward spin on events.

"Sales and customer traffic were below our expectations in 2012, but as we execute our ambitious transformation plan, we are pleased with the great strides we made to improve jcpenney's cost structure, technology platforms and the overall customer experience," he said in a statement.

Analysts had already been expecting same-store sales to decline 27.8 percent, but the even weaker figure put huge pressure on Johnson.

"He's going to have recover this year or he's done," said Ron Friedman, retail practice leader at the consulting firm Marcum LLP. "He's running out of time. He has to have it turned around by the third quarter."

Penney reported a net loss of $552 million, or $2.51 per share in the 14 weeks ended February 2, compared with a loss of $87 million, or $0.41 per share for a 13-week period a year earlier.

Excluding restructuring charges and non cash pension plan expenses, the company posted an adjusted loss of $1.95 per share, as net sales fell 27 percent to $3.88 billion. The loss was nearly three times worse than even the most pessimistic Wall Street estimate tracked by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, while sales were also below forecasts.

Gross margin was 23.8 percent of sales, down 6.4 percentage points from a year earlier. The company blamed lower-than-expected sales and a higher level of sales on clearance.

Retailers ranging from Kohl's Corp to Target Corp said the holiday was heavily discount-driven, putting additional pressure on Penney's no sales, no coupon philosophy.

The department store chain had $930 million in cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter.

Review: 'Lucid Nightmares' aims to keep viewers up at night | The ...

Under a full moon, it could have been Halloween Feb. 25 at the Harold Acting Studio. Cotton cobwebs, a fake skull and a buzzing black and white television decorated the front steps. A hunched Frankenstein-like greeter grasping a three-tier candleholder led each individual or group in and directed them to a seat. This simple introduction confirmed the horror to come later in the play: ?Lucid Nightmares? was not going to be an ordinary scare.

Four female seniors in the current Theatre Studies class ? Sarah Beese, Elizabeth Floyd, Jayme Mantos and Ashley Meeks ? wrote the play for class. It is the first fully developed play the group has ever produced.

The women found inspiration in Edgar Allan Poe?s work as they started writing the play. This deceased writer feasted on gothic horror and wrote some of the most disturbing pieces in American literature.

Monday night was a full house. Audience members walked quickly inside the theater to find a seat in the middle ? a seat on the end of a row would surely mean interacting with the horrors up close and personal. The room was foggy with dim lighting until the start of the play, when it went almost completely black.

Beese, clothed in black and holding a small candle, entered the stage first. Before exiting the stage, she warned the audience to guard their souls.

?Lucid Nightmares? was split into three parts, each performance challenging the insanity of its characters. The title of the play itself questioned the reality of each scene. While some sections appeared realistic, others seemed more dreamlike.

The playwrights seemed to know when the audience would feel calm because as soon as the tension started to die down, something would happen ? a suffocation, a confession or a fantastical change ? and viewers would be gripping their seats again.

The women also knew how to include precise and intriguing details to disturb the audience, such as an old woman?s obsession with a dead youth?s teeth. The playwrights were also aware of how to successfully portray two different scenes at the same time and have their viewers understand what had happened.

The second section of the play started after a somewhat unorganized and lengthy blackout, and the Harold Studio presented other difficulties for the cast and crew. The platforms the performers walked across were exceptionally squeaky, which was sometimes favorable since the effect created additional anxiety. But when it became difficult to hear the performers speak, it was easy to lose track of what was happening.

Aside from minor technical flaws like microphone static and fog machines? sputters, ?Lucid Nightmares? was a remarkably well-done play in an industry where horror is rarely experimented with or attempted at all.

Dark looks rule the Milan catwalks for autumn/winter season

MILAN (Reuters) - Fashion designers at Milan fashion week delivered a dark palette and masculine styles for autumn-winter wardrobes in a reflection of Italy's bleak economic and political landscape.

Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Roberto Cavalli were among the fashion houses whose darkly colored catwalk collections for the 2013-14 autumn/winter season catwalk shows evoked the anxiety over grim expectations for Italian fashion sales, worries over European economic health and uncertainty over domestic politics.

Designer Miuccia Prada, whose sleek collections are eagerly awaited at the Milan week, chose a post-industrial setting to present her look for a modern woman hemmed in by the grim realities of life since an economic downturn began in 2008.

"It seems to me that in the contemporary world you cannot let yourself go completely," Prada said after her show.

Armani re-worked a masculine style for a collection that included suspenders and jumpsuits in black velvet accessorized with black berets.

"We must create clothes that women wear," Armani said backstage from a show attended by Princess Charlene of Monaco.

Luxury retailers have fared better than other industries during the prolonged recession in southern Europe thanks to demand from wealthy travelers from Asia, the Middle East and Russia.

But global sales of Italian fashion - including those of smaller brands hit hard by the crisis - are expected to fall by 3.5 percent this year after dropping 5.4 percent in 2012, textile and fashion body Sistema Moda Italia (SMI) said.

Designers expressed concerns about stability in Italy, where the uncertain outcome of parliamentary elections held during the fashion week rekindled fears of a new euro zone debt crisis.

"We need infrastructures to attract tourists but we also need a long-term government for such long-term measures," said Michele Norsa, chief executive of Salvatore Ferragamo.

SCULPTED BEAUTY

Gucci designer Frida Giannini offered jackets narrowed at the waist with egg-shaped shoulders and worn over pencil skirts below the knee. A mostly pragmatic look designed for work.

Giannini, who is going to have her first baby in a couple of weeks, used colors like purple, rust, moss green and dark blue for a femme fatale she said was "steely yet sexy".

If colors were dark, materials were bold.

Neoprene, lurex and vinyl surfaced everywhere, with Versace delivering the most daring looks in a rock-and-roll show.

Creative head Donatella Versace showed ankle-length silk dresses with vinyl details contouring the body, while oversized coats came in bright yellow and black-and-white colors.

Designers reserved their boldest ideas for accessories, where sales have risen during the recession because they are more affordable in price and can be used for more than a season.

"Sales of my accessories are growing," Armani said, after showing shoes with sculpted heels and a variety of handbags.

Versace opted for silver spikes on chain necklaces and studded boots, while Roberto Cavalli crafted necklaces in the shape of snakes and roses and large earring enveloping the ears.

Dolce & Gabbana, who drew inspiration from Byzantine mosaics, had shoes with inlaid sculpted heels, capped their models with golden crowns and draped them in jewels.

Other trends for next winter include zips, seen at Etro, pleated skirts from Blumarine, and a return of padded shoulders.

Simple method devised for determining atrial fibrillation risk in women

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of abnormal heart rhythm, affecting 2.5 million Americans. If left undetected or untreated, atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke. Determining who is at increased risk for atrial fibrillation has been difficult, especially among individuals without established heart disease. But now, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital have devised and tested a simple atrial fibrillation risk prediction model, based on six easily obtained factors: a woman's age, height, weight, blood pressure, alcohol consumption and smoking history.

The model is published in the online edition of the European Heart Journal on February 26, 2013.

"The real strength of this model is its simplicity," said Brendan Everett, MD, the lead author of the study and a cardiologist at BWH. "Using this tool, we can estimate an otherwise healthy woman's risk of developing atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years. The tool only requires that a patient's health care provider know some basic information about the patient. There is no need for any advanced testing or additional cost in order to use the risk tool."

The risk prediction model was derived and tested in more than 20,000 middle aged women of European ancestry. Researchers found that the new model was significantly better at identifying women at increased risk for atrial fibrillation over the next 10 years than estimating a woman's risk of atrial fibrillation using her age alone.

"Nearly one in four women were reassigned to a more accurate atrial fibrillation risk category by using the new model," said Everett. "While specific interventions to lower a woman's risk of a first atrial fibrillation episode are still in development, this personalized information can help health care providers stress the importance of heart healthy behaviors, including weight loss and moderation of alcohol consumption."

The study also examined whether recently discovered genetic markers for atrial fibrillation risk improved researchers' ability to accurately predict a woman's risk for atrial fibrillation and indeed, the researchers found that a genetic risk score has potential to improve the ability to predict atrial fribrillation. However, Everett notes that while this information is scientifically interesting, more research on genetic testing is needed before this combination model can be recommended for use in the general public. Further research is also needed to determine if the study results would apply to men or a broader population of women.

It's back! New Jeep gets an old name: Cherokee

Chrysler is turning to an old name for a brand new Jeep. Say farewell to Liberty. The replacement model that will added to the line-up for 2014 will be rechristened the Jeep Cherokee, reviving a nameplate that helped kick off one of the most dramatic transformations in modern automotive history.

Jeepisn?t saying much beyond describing the 2014 Cherokee as an ?all-new, ?no-compromise?? vehicle that will set ?a new standard with even more best-in-class capability, exemplary on-road driving dynamics, and fuel economy improvements of more than 45% versus the outgoing mid-size SUV model.?

The new mid-size sport-utility vehicle will make its formal debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be assembled at Chrysler?s big Toledo Assembly Plant a half-hour south of Detroit, the same factory that produced the old Jeep Liberty.

A quick look at the styling suggests the automaker wanted a more modern and distinctive look, with design cues clearly borrowing from the Jeep brand?s flagship sport-utility model. But this is more than just a ?baby? Grand Cherokee.

(For a look at some spy shots of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, Click Here.)

Observers and company insiders alike say Jeep is taking a risky approach with the front end, in particular, which features a folded take on the brand?s familiar, 7-slot grille, as well as distinctive split headlight and foglamps.

Company officials have hinted that the new model will focus less on the traditional, go-anywhere capabilities associated with Jeep products, putting more emphasis on the on-road ride and comfort that today?s ute buyers prefer.

The old Liberty model was a ?niche part? of an SUV market that has ?moved on? from its original focus on off-roading, said Mike Manley, CEO of the Jeep brand.

The Jeep marque was a major factor in the explosive growth of the sport-utility segment during the 1970s, ?80s and ?90s, the launch of the original Cherokee in 1974 creating a surge in demand as U.S. buyers looked for more enticing alternatives to their traditional sedans and wagons.

The early version ? which remained in production through 2001 ? also helped introduce the concept of four-wheel-drive to a more mainstream audience. Today?s newest all-wheel-drive systems are becoming increasingly common on conventional sedans and even sports cars, as well as SUVs.

The Detroit Bureau: Despite Recent Price Spike, DoE Expects Gas to Level Off, Even Decline

And on the car-based crossover-utility vehicles that have largely supplanted more traditional, truck-based sport-utes. CUVs often sacrifice the off-road capabilities in favor of better on-road manners and improved fuel economy. But the unibody design of the big Jeep Grand Cherokee shows that it is possible to meld off- and on-road capabilities in one vehicle.

The new 2014 Jeep Cherokee is being seen as a critical part of the brand?s global growth plans. Long focused on the North American market, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has declared the Jeep brand one of a handful of marques that will be sold worldwide.

The reborn Cherokee will likely play a critical part of that, along with the latest updated of the Jeep Patriot and Compass models and an even smaller crossover that the maker plans to produce in Italy. The Grand Cherokee is also getting an early mid-cycle update for 2014, along with the addition of a new, high-mileage diesel engine.

The Detroit Bureau: Ford Looking to Novel Way to Get Back into Compact Pickup Market

But Jeep isn?t focusing only on downsized models. The marque also is rumored to be developing a larger ute that could bring back another once-popular nameplate, that of the old Grand Wagoneer.

With the addition of the Liberty and the Compass and Patriot updates, CEO Marchionne is hoping to boost Jeep sales to around 800,000 by 2014, up from 701,626 in 2012 ? which was the brand?s best year ever.

The grapevine was right, Chrysler is bringing back the Jeep Cherokee.

The mid-size SUV that?ll be called Cherokee ? slotted below the Grand Cherokee in the lineup ? will be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show next month as a 2014 model.

Chrysler says Cherokee will be built at its Jeep factory in Toledo, Ohio and will go on sale the third quarter this year.

The Detroit Bureau: Over 250,000 Vehicles Damages, Destroyed By Sandy

Cherokee, a boxy and sturdy utility with off-road credibility, was the brand?s well-known SUV for more than two decades until it was replaced by Liberty in the U.S. starting in the 2002 model year (Chrysler, confusingly, also sold the Liberty under the Cherokee name elsewhere in the world)..

Now the pendulum swings back, and Cherokee will supplant the Liberty here.

No specifics on power, size, price, mileage, but the automaker says it will be a ?no compromise? vehicle and will have mileage improvements of more than 45% vs. the current Liberty.

False report led to MIT campus lockdown: police

BOSTON (Reuters) - A false report of a man with a gun prompted a temporary lockdown at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday morning and a room-by-room security sweep of a campus building, police said.

MIT locked down its campus during the search, issuing a "shelter in place" warning that said multiple law enforcement agencies, including Cambridge Police, had responded to a report of a person carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor.

Cambridge is just outside of Boston.

"No armed suspects were found in the building or on campus, and police believe that the event, as reported, did not occur," Cambridge Police said in a statement.

Cambridge and MIT police are continuing to investigate the incident, the statement said.

MIT lifted its lockdown shortly after police said the search had come up empty and there was no threat to public safety. MIT said it was returning to normal operations and MIT police would continue to monitor the campus.
